Getting rid of my corks

by Jon Peterson » Sun Nov 14, 2010 6:41 pm

I reorganized the wine cellar yesterday. I am getting rid of the thousands of corks that I don't know why I've kept and I'm throwing out some wooden wine cases. I can actually walk in now, sit down and open a bottle if I want to. I'm not done yet but the room looks twice as big (it's only 11' x 11'. I still have to get cellartracker up to date, which, as I recall, was one of my resolutions for 2010...never too late.

Been thowing them out as we pull them for a few years now. Main reason is that so few of them are actually corks these days.

Corks make an excellent mulch layer for potted plants, if you have such things. I've got three blueberry bushes planted to wine barrels and the corks provide a good layer of soil moisture protection during the summer bearing season and make the naked plant look a tad more interesting during the leafless winters.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jenise. I did not want to send them to a landfill and will now reuse them in the back yard.

A few months ago, Jon, Whole Foods publicized that their wine shops were accepting corks and recycling them for use in cork stuff like, I dunno, flooring and Birkenstock soles, I guess. I don't know how they'd feel about accepting a giant load, but it might be worth a call if you don't want them in landfills.

I think Kermit Lynch accepts corks as well.

I've always discarded my used corks. However, I find it interesting that sometimes, when I search on EBay for new corks for my home made wine, I find several people selling their old, used corks.

That's the organization that Whole Food uses. Amorim, of course, is a leader in the Portuguese cork industry.

Dammit, man. You missed the phenomenal potential to build the first raft to cross the Atlantic. Think of it, you might have put Kon Tiki to shame!

I haven't gotten rid of them yet, Rogov! If Whole Foods turns me down then look for me on the horizon.

Corks are worth a few bucks a hundred on eBay.

I saw one guy who collected enough that he removed the door to his wine cellar, laid it across sawhorses, sprayed it with contact cement and stuck corks, (name out) all over it. Provided insulation, some visiual interest and got rid of his corks.

Me, I keep the ends of wooden cases - got Bordeaux back into the 60s, but discovered I have nowhere to put them up, blank walls being at a real premium chez Spohn. Still threatening to glue them to the ceiling somewhere.

Corks? I give them to Jenise. I think she makes little kitty anoraks or something with them.
