WTN: Portuguese Wine and Portuguese dish: nice match

by Tom N. » Thu Nov 11, 2010 8:44 pm

Deep purple red, almost black. Rich nose of ripe purple plums, raisins, and dark chocolate. Nice midpalate of dark fruit, clean acidity and powerful but smooth tannins. Long finish of dark fruit and tannic grip. This is a full bodied wine with excellent balance.

With portuguese kale soup: nice tasty :D match to the soup base and the kale. This flavor combo really sings together with tannins from the kale and the wine matching nicely. Ok match with the chorizo in the soup but not great because the chorizo is a bit too spicy for the wine. Kale and portato in the soup fresh from the garden. Chorizo from our local butcher.

Wine: 2006 Quinta do Infantado, Douro, 14% abv. 16 months in oak, unfiltered.

Excellent Tom and great food idea. Often wonder what to match with these big Douro reds. Um, was not too "new world" was it? Seen it here and have wondered if I should give it a go! Might be tasting this Sat if opened at big DeVines Taste of Portugal event.

Hi Bob,

I would say it is definitely leaning to the 'New World' side of wine. It was so dark and fruity on the nose with nice fruit on the palate that the style stuck me as 'New World." However, it was nicely balanced with plenty of acidity and tannin to go with the fruit. I have had other big Duoro reds (Quinta de Crasto) that were less fruity and more acidic. The interesting thing about this wine was its expressive nose. I really enjoy a good nose and this one hit me as nice and even though I didn't use this descriptor it struck me as smelling like port, which is not really surprising.

Just opened the `05 and have to say way too young. "Are you crazy" from across the table!!

Roy visited this quinta in `08, here is his report. Full of interest that`s for sure....>

I have to think that his port tours are to die for, wish I had the chance to go.

Thanks Bob,

Yes, it would be great to go on a wine tasting adventure with Roy. I read the report and it is quite interesting and informative. I think it is curious that Roy like his Duoro red the best of all the Infantado wines he tasted. That says something.

Thanks for your note, Tom. I've always wanted to try the Infantado table wine, as I don't think the US importer brings it into the US. We are a fan of their ports, with their basic Ruby being one of the better ones around.

Yes, being a traditionally made wine from a good year I would expect it might benefit (I saw your TN in the Portugal thread). I have about a dozen or so bottles of various Douro wines, mostly from the '05 and '07 vintages and would have pulled the corks on at least one, except I expect most would be better with some age. Maybe tomorrow for dinner I open one so I can contribute a final TN to the thread.
