Open Mike: Teroldego from Italia!!

Continuing in our search for wines we have never heard of before (and of course following Otto`s suggestion), some forumites are about to scour the countryside high and low for some Teroldego. I found one......from California!! Well, it counts so I`m ready to pull the cork, here`s an interesting link........

Bob, thanks for grabbing the Open Mike. As I told you in E-mail, I'm kind of Teroldego-impaired here, the only one I've noticed recently being a little more pricey than I really like. But I'll look around, and play if I can!

I brought a 1997 Foradori Teroldego Rotaliano to an offline earlier this week, but we never got around to opening it. I'll have to insist next time, so I can jump into this open mike forum.

I am curious to see others' experiences.

Otto rocks! I'm going to search for this at every wine store in DC and MD this weekend!

Tomorrow, I'm opening Foradori's Granato 2001. We only have two Teroldegos available here and I've already tried the other one. Here's the note for that from a bit less than a year ago. It was a nice basic wine, but not something I'm dying to try again so I haven't bought another bottle, but will instead translate my old note:

Mezzacorona Teroldego Rotaliano Riserva 2001 9,99€ 27.11.2005

A rather juicy scent with a touch of herbs and earth. Simple but refreshing. The palate has a nice bitter twist to the fruit. It is red toned and a has a pleasantly bitter edge. It's nice enough, but hardly inspiring. It does seem to be true to the grape for sure!

Sounds delish! I tried to find one at my BAWS, no luck. I will continue the search tomorrow.

Otto, I think I have a note somewhere about a memorable Pinot Grigio from this winery. Looks like a busy weekend on the forum, some claret is being pulled too!!

I'll admit: I was scared about this wine and hence invited two friends of mine over who like spoofulated wines so that they would finish it if I couldn't (I had a Muscadet in the fridge for me, LOL!!!). I'm thinking of buying two more bottles despite the godawful price.

• 2001 Foradori Granato Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT - Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT (9/23/2006) 13% 48,10€
  Though I’ve read that this should be the spoofulated cuvée from this producer, this bottle didn’t taste too much like that. There is certainly some oak, but it isn’t dominating. Rather it is earthy, red toned and savoury with a delightful bitter twist to it – almost like that of Lagrein’s, but maybe more raspberryish than that other delightful grape. It certainly is a bit meaty and smoky – I guess that must be the oak – but even these aromas are beautifully integrated into all else. The palate does show a bit more modern in style with sweet fruit, more noticeable oak (but still balanced IMO), fine tannins and with a slightly tamed vivacity when compared to the other Teroldegos I’ve tried. Yet it does have nice levels of acidity and the aftertaste is very long and herbal. Very nice now with a 5 hour decanting, but really does cry out for more age.

Alternative heading could have read......."How to loosen the elastic in your underwear". An in-joke around the Doris ranch when the wine is tough and a bit of a bruiser!!

Opened 5 hours, not decanted, 13.6%. Only 580 cases made by a winery that makes a pretty good zin as well as some Italian varietal wines. I really did not know what to expect from this wine but thanks to Otto for alerting us to Teroldego!!

Color. Huge black inky wine, thin band of ruddy purple on the rim. Legs run fast but have some cling.

Nose. Initially lots of cocoa nuances here, plus some black fruits, cherry and herbs.

Palate. Really tannic even after opening 5 hours. Stemmy too but started to open out a little with time. Tarry and some licorice, black fruits/brambleberry. Do not think this is spoofulated but packs a punch for a yearling!! Enough acidity and good fruit profile under all that is going on!. Not a ripe style and wonder where this will go in time? Wish I had the real thing from Italy to compare. Interesting experience though.

Cost was $22 Cdn.
Food-- NY steak, pots and mixed salad.
