Very little drinking over the last several weeks as I prepare for a seven band stint at the National Jazz Convention (in eight weeks) amongst other casual loca lgigs and a festival at Moruya a few weeks back (which didn't go so well). But the good news is - the Pewsey Vale 2010 Riesling is absolutely outstanding at 15 bucks a bottle. Just opened my first bottle - pristine steely lime fruit with an acid cut/balance to die for. 93 points on its ear! 10-15 year drinking window. Great juice.
Other wine's worth crowing about opened since I last posted -
1988 John Riddoch - very fine cool climate/low alcohol Cabernet - perhaps a bit green for modern/younger palates but very left-bankish. 90 points. Fully mature but will hold for quite a few years
2002 Petaluma Riesling - brilliant Clare Riesling - probably one of the best of the line methinks - no hurry to drink this as it still very tight and steely with incredible acidity and monumental length. 93 points
1999 Frederic Esmonin Estournelles-St-Jacques 1er cru - opens with sous bois and somewhat earthy, perhaps a little barnyard but awfully complex at first ... but wow, what a transformation in the glass over a couple of hours. Just gorgeous bing cherry fruit with subtle gamy/sappy undertones and sensational fine tannins and refreshing acidity. Has another 10 years in front of it but won't hurt to drink anytime from now,
1989 Trimbach CFE Riesling VT - simply awesome ... all recent bottles rate minimum 95 points. Incredible complexity - not enough time to elaborate ATM.
1989 Hugel Riesling VT - another ripsnorter with an apricot kernel character but not in the same league as the 1989 CFE. About 92 points.
2007 Voyager Estate Chardonnay - continues the very fine run from this excellent Margaret River producer - at 30 bucks I will buy this 9/10 times before I bought a 15%
