Tuesday was just vegetarian tacos with assorted leftover wines from previous night (both 64 Riojas last fine, as did the Billecart and Conterno). Wednesday I was going in with Betsy, she had gotten me a ticket for opening night (Bernstein's "A Quiet Place", a little lacking in cohesion, but worth seeing). We just picked up pizza before heading in, I opened the 2009 Breton "Trinch!" Bourgueil. Darker fruit, bright acids, light tannins. Very fresh, with citrus and floral notes. On following night I had more (with assorted leftovers), with a day's air it was more expansive but no less fresh, a good vintage for this. B+
I also tried the 2008 Binner "Les Saveurs" (Alsace), Fred had dropped me an open (that day) sample bottle. A mix of Pinot Gris, Riesling, Muscat, and Gewurztraminer, but the latter two (especially the Gewurz) dominate. Rich, floral, musky, with a hint of RS, but good acidity. A little oily note. Next day I made an ersatz choucroute (well, wrong meats- franks and some homemade "Champagne sausage") and had the Binner again. Good not great match, something a little leaner would have gone better. But a nice wine on the richer side for an edelzwicker style blend. B
Besides the Binner last night, I tried the 2009 E. Knoll Loibner Blauer Burgunder Federspiel Rose. This is the first pink (quite pale, with a little copper edge)Knoll I've ever seen. Midbodied, reminds me of something like a lighter Marsannay rose. Red cherry fruit, herby, a touch of earth, good acidity. I bought 2 bottles on impulse, at $27 (actually about $22 with a coupon), this isn't inexpensive for rose, but it's tasty, unusual, and has that cool label. B/B+
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
