WTN: A selection of wines from a tasting

by Michael K » Mon Oct 25, 2010 10:51 pm

Went to a wine event tonight and arrived late so missed out on a few...... too bad but got to most that I wanted to.

1992 Dom Perignon: I finished my 6 pack of this LONG time ago.....and I really do regret this if this is what it looks like. This wine is showing really elegant now, the sharpness (never really all that sharp) is now gone and the density is up. Smooth, vibrant still, some toast and honey but mostly secondary. I wish I kept a few until now.

1999 Cristal: Second time I've tasted this this year, and very consistent. This champagne is very fresh, lifted, vibrant, coconut, almost a bit off-dry, focused and very balanced. Very nice will need a bit more time.

1996 Comte de Vogue Chambolle Musigny: Beautiful. All the reasons why we drink burgundy. Not a perfect wine to be sure but very nicely presented. Very elegant nose, earth, berries, pomegranate, floral. On the palate much the same. The wine was elegant, nice supple texture, medium bodied and long persistence. Wonderful even in the context of the wines this evening.

2002 Marcassin three Sisters, Sonoma Coast: Another treat, completely different than the Comte Vogue CM. This one is much more up front. Large nose, pretty strawberries, cherries, bright but dense. On the palate, fruit dominates, smooth, round ripe texture, some complexity, nicely done. which one you prefer has more to do with style than the wines themselves which where both fantastic.

2000 Pavie: Ohhh....why does Jancis Robinson hate this wine so....I'm not sure. This is a large wine, still tight and tannic after all these years, no where near ready to drink. Must have been massive when fresh. Lovely black cherries, cassis, berries, lots of oak of course, what an individual expression of merlot. Not had anything quite like this and it is as individual as Masseto. Not sure about 100 points but damn its nice.

2003 Cos Estournel: Nice wine but completely outclassed by the Pavie. No where near ready yet and I suspect that might be a short peak, not sure why. Showing some age, opaque, nose with some smoke, berry, cassis, tobacco, spices and coffee. Good complexity, drinking more advanced than the Pavie. I'm sure that it is a great bottle but my glass did not go back for more.

2005 Clos Saint Jean La Combe des fours CDP: Bold broad, generous, powerful, wow. And this is not a large density wine, but man this thing is wonderful....probably my second favorite after the comte de vogue CM. Nose of ripe red fruits, raspberries, glycerine, herbs, wonderful! More of the same on the palate, great texture, which we touched this in another 5-10 years!

2001 Tua Rita Giusto di Norti: I love this wine. I know that this is atypical but what an execution. This thing massive. On the nose, its spices and old wood, cherries and loads of other stuff. On the palate, theres more. The density of this thing is massive. Double decanted (more than that I think) and left for five hours....and still tight. I wish I had a case of this.

I missed out on some things I really wanted to try, like the El Nino, the Aalto PS, a 99 Fanti BdM.......

it was the tasting that Skinner Auction pulled together to prepare for an upcoming auction. I was able to attend just over 1/2 of it.

Thanks for the heads up on the 02 Dom. I'll look around!
