WTN: Laible 09 Rieslings

by Rahsaan » Sun Oct 24, 2010 5:17 pm

2009 Andreas Laible Durbacher Plauelrain Riesling Spätlese Trocken Alte Reben
Rocky direct riesling with hints of floral citrus oils but bracingly austere and best for drinking without thinking.

2009 Andreas Laible Riesling Spätlese Trocken An der Kapelle
A little more to be interested in here, tingling tangy salty lemons with earthy backward grip. Loosens up a bit with air and has a refreshing profile that makes me think it’s German Muscadet.

2009 Andreas Laible Durbacher Plauelrain Riesling Spätlese Trocken “Achat“
Here’s where things get more complex, richer and more oily although of course still basically a mouthful of mineral rocks. With air it shows some warm chewy slightly nutty notes but it always retains the stern mineral lemon backbone profile. By the end of the night I am impressed with the depth and would love to see how this develops over time.

2009 Andreas Laible Durbacher Plauelrain Riesling Spätlese Trocken GG
The best of the bunch, as it should be. Still plenty of salty lemon mountain rocks but much more intensity and tension inside the body of the wine. Whipping through the mouth with a suaveness that is very pleasant. On the second day some more flavor details begin to peak out and I would also like to see this developing over time.

No, this was in Nyc.

But they were imported to the US by my in-laws!

They also bought a few for their cellar in Germany, to share with me on my next visit. And even though these will be more to their liking than off-dry riesling, I think the GG and the Achat would be the only ones they really enjoy. Will see.

Hi Rahsaan -

Thank you for the notes. I really enjoyed the one Laible that I have had - a 2008 Plauelrain SL that I bought in New York City last year - and would love to try more sometime.

At any rate, are Achat and an der Kapelle the names of specific sections of the Plauelrain vineyard? Just wondering, since I am not very familiar with Laible yet.
