Any thoughts about aging August Kesseler?

His wines, that is. Specifically, this one: Rudesheimer Bischofsberg, Riesling Spatlese, 2004.

Just give me an excuse to open a bottle of Riesling...

Chaim, Hi...

I have not tasted this particular wine but Kessler's Spatlese Rieslings are almost always ready to drink from release and will cellar nicely for 16-18 years after the vintage.

I thought this was going to be about Spätburgunder, and I was going to say: "Yes, please do!" But now this curve-ball about Riesling...
I had the chance to visit Kesseler in late 2005 and so drank the 2004 Bischofsberg but have not tasted it since (is this the LGK spät?) I was very enthusiastic about how the vintage was drinking at the time and have enjoyed an #04 Berg Schlossberg or two in the last years which were great and great values too. In general, Kesselers Riesling seems to retain youth longer than a lot of his peers, and I have never tasted a Kesseler (Riesling) that was over the hill from any vintage. I'd say hold.

Cheers,
Bill

Super nice guy and great wines. I tasted his wines once in Hong Kong during the VinExpo. His Pinots are really interesting and terroir, wow, have him take you on a vineyard by vineyard tasting and you will see the difference, even though those vineyards are effectively right beside each other.

While I agree you can certainly hold the wine, 2004 is one of the more approachable of recent vintages, so if you are looking for something to drink then by all means do so.

Hmmph, I had a typo in my entry in the cellar software, which I've just corrected. The bottle I have is a 2005, actuaslly.

Then I tilt more to aging it. The 2005s are quite rich.
