WTN: '09 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner

by Mike Filigenzi » Sun Oct 24, 2010 12:48 am

A wine from the Alto Adige that turned up at the corner market. $20, 14% alcohol.

Pale straw color. Smells really nice, with intense floral and peach aromas that jump out even when the wine's cold. More austere in the mouth, with an initial hit of peach-nectarine fruit quickly giving way to very firm and chalky acidity. Finish is very dry and taut, with a slight tannic character and maybe a little heat showing.

I picked this up today because it looked interesting. It turned out to be just that. The intense acidity belies the 14% alcohol, and it ends up being quite a mouthful. It cries out for some kind of food that would benefit from the acidity while playing up some of the fruit in the wine. (Unfortunately, I didn't have anything along those lines to eat tonight.) It tastes a bit to me like an acidified version of some Foothill Viogniers. Not bad, but......interesting.

Guess I'd give it 85 points or a B+ or a double Moe or three stars or something along those lines.

Mike,
Not had the '09 Kerner yet, but the Abbazzia, across the board, makes some wonderful wines. I think their
GWT is world-class and better than most GWT from Alsace. Mostly because they're....dry.
Tried Darrell's Mondeuse yet??

This one was definitely dry!! I'd like to try it again with food that complements it.

Haven't been able to get over to the store. I'm guessing I've missed out on the Mondeuse, but I'll look for it just in case.

Their Gewurztraminer is outstanding. I really enjoyed this wine at a recent Italian tasting. I really got the Viognier comparison. It is a definite food wine.
