WTN: I just love good GSMs

by Tom N. » Thu Oct 21, 2010 7:50 pm

Deep and richly garnet colored. A complex nose of spicy (esp. cloves) purple plums with a backgound of earthiness. Luscious midpalate of bramble fruit, juicy acidity and smooth but grippy tannins. A medium to long finish of dark fruit and tannic tingle at the back of the palate. Nicely balanced and medium bodied wine. I really enjoyed this wine with dinner.

Nice match with a grilled lamburger (our local butcher makes these, and they are great :D with wine). The lamb calmed down the fruit and brought out the earthiness and spice in the wine.

Wine: Domaine Grand Veneur, Les Champauvins, Cotes du Rhone Villages, 2007 15% abv. 70% Grenache, 20% syrah, 10 % Mouvedre. Rocky clay soil, single vineyard wine.

Tom, Alain Jaume makes good wine across the entire spectrum. If you can get the Grand Venur CdR in 3 liter box for around $40 (it sells here for that) I say it is a no brainer. Jaume wines are imported to the states by Fran Kysela and I have noticed in the past couple years he has taken some price increases, but this one is still a bargain at the stated priced. A belated happy Thanksgiving.

One of our go-to weekday wines. It's really good stuff.

Thanks Bob,

I don't think we can get the 3 liter box in Ontario, but I will look for it. I agree, Jaume makes some good juice.

Part 2.

I guess I am on a GSM kick. I just pulled a CdP for dinner tonight.

Deep garnet color. A rich nose of spice, plums, blackberries and raisins. Some base notes of tobacco and chocolate develop with time in glass. Smooth midpalate with bramble fruit, soft tannins, and just enough acidity to balance the wine. Medium finish of dark fruit. This is a nice drink-now style CdP with lots of ripe fruit, but I think it could be cellared for 2-3 years and it might even get better.

With food: a tasty match with grilled ribeye smothered in sauteed onions and mushrooms. The food seems to enhance the finish of dark fruit and give it a nice fruity edge.

Chateauneug-du-Pape 2007, Perrin & Fils, Les Sinards, 14.5% abv. Half bottle.

Hi Bob,

I like your idea. GSMs from around the world, or just from France?
