We had dinner last night a Cafe @ ChezPanisse w/ longtime friend, DaveJones. He brought a special btl he had been saving to share w/ me:
1. EdmundsStJohn Syrah DurellVnyd/SonomaVlly (14.4%) 1995: Dark color w/ slight bricking; intense smokey/pungent/roasted/Rhonish strong blackberry/Syrah/spicy beautiful/complex slight earthy/Rhonish nose; tart beautiful/complex pungent/smokey/Rhonish/coffee/espresso some blackberry/Syrah/licorice fairly smooth/balance very Rhonish/roasted/espresso very complex slight tannic flavor; very long/lingering blackberry/Syrah/licorice strong coffee/espresso/roasted/Rhonish/pungent/smokey smooth very complex finish w/ slight tannic/astringent aftertaste. Stunningly developed old Calif Syrah.

1. This was probably one of the best aged Calif Syrahs I've had. The slight tannic aftertaste suggests that it may be starting its downhill slide and that it best be drunk up. Though it would not be mistaken for a CoteRotie, I can see it being described as an older Hermitage. Just about as good as a Calif Syrah can get. And I see nothing to suggest that Steve's recent Syrahs will not be the equal to this Durell with age.
