TN: Big Malbec, not too glossy

by Dale Williams » Wed Oct 13, 2010 12:14 pm

Last night I did some coffee-rubbed porterhouses, which we had with a variety of leftover sides. I had a bottle of 2007 Luigi Bosca "Single Vineyard" Malbec (Lujan de Cuyo) that someone had brought as a gift, this seemed like a good time to drink it. I don't drink many Argentine wines, other than the occasional Achaval Ferrer. I actually had a half bottle of another steak wine in reserve, but never used it. Big, powerful, with sweet fruit, but moderate oak (despite 14 months in French on label) and without the glossiness that coats a lot of $20 South American wines. Better acids, fairly restrained oak, sweet dark fruit, a little mocha note. It's not my favorite flavor profile, but not a bad steak wine at all. B
PS as a Francophile I found it a little perplexing that it says "single vineyard" but as far as I can tell there is no naming of that vineyard! :)

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
