What's your favorite?

by Joy Lindholm » Tue Oct 12, 2010 11:52 am

I must admit I am new to Wine Lover's Page, so forgive me if this has been discussed before, but I am curious to hear what everyone's favorite wines are. This could be varietal, region or a specific bottle. I know it's hard for me to narrow down a favorite, but I want to hear from everyone else!

Cheers!

My favorites are acid and mineral-driven wines (usually mono-cepage) from the northern sections of European wine growing regions.

My top three favorite regions would be Tuscany, Bordeaux, and Rhone.

My favorite red wine variety is Pinot Noir (Burgundy AND New World.)
My favorite white wine variety is Riesling.
I also like white Burgundies (Chardonnay grape).

I love wine! Impossible to id a favourite.

I get the same excitement sitting down at Domaine Sigalas on the Island of Oia in Greece and finding a great white as I do sitting down at Ridge in California and finding a great Chardonnay.
I love Red and I love whites and I love Roses and I love sparking and I love dessert wines and Sherries and ,.......

I hate to say this but there is very little that I would not drink. Characterless wines which are now made all over the world, fine.... not a fan but so much stuff out there is now good and we need to expand our horizons ....we might find our next fav thing.

New York State (Finger Lakes), California, Spain (not necessarily in that order). Most recent post was French.

My favorites might include:

Licorice-y, cherryish, and savory Napa Cabs (even if I cannot afford them really right now)

Cheap Bordeaux that I can drink young

Northern Rhone Syrah and those California wines which approach the bright, racy, meaty, peppery character of the best NR wines.

Savoie and Jura reds and whites.

and good Cru Beaujolais. (Read Hoke's wonderful tasting note!)

My favorites are a moving target. Currently, my favorite white is Alsatian Riesling and my favorite red is Oregon Pinot Noir. I'm thinking about switching to white Burgundy and Cabernet Franc in the near future.

I know the feeling! My favorites change at times too, mostly based on the seasons. This summer I lived off of dry Rose from Loire, Rhone and Languedoc.

All time faves for me are Gruner Veltliner, Chinon, S. Rhone and Corbieres. I'm getting more into German whites and red Burgundies now, among other things.

Seriously, isn't this a bit like asking who your favorite child is? Doesn't it depend on the moment? It would be a lot easier to tell you the wines I DON"T really care for (New World Chardonnay and SB's not from the Loire) than to list the wines I like. Even those wines would have major exceptions!

Tough question! Does "favorite" refer to what I drink the most of or what I enjoy the most? If the former, then it has to be home made. I have a variety of home made wines. If the latter, then Riesling, Vouvray, Pinot Noir, Bordeaux and CalCabs. Not a fan of SB or Syrah.

Haha, yes I suppose you are right! It is a bit like picking your favorite child, but my thought was, given the choice of any, which do you naturally or most often gravitate towards?

And it is much simpler to rule out the wines you dont like. For me that would be most New World styled wines - flabby, jammy, over-oaked monsters.

Joy, Hi...

Despite the two pistols you seem to be carrying with such charm in your avatar, I will have to beg off on this question. I am reminded of the song from Finian's Rainbow: "When I'm not near the girl I love, I love the girl I'm near". So it is with wine, for my "favorite" would depend as much on the mood of the moment, the company, the settting and its ambiance, the dishes on which is dining and perhaps a dozen or two more clearly psychological reasons.

I am also reminded of the story, perhaps apocryphal by now of when the Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild was asked, of all the great wines he had tasted in his life, which was the one that left the greatest impression. The Baron hesitated for a moment, broke out in a large smile and said: "Ah...I remember it well. I was nineteen years old, I was on a beach at Normandy with a beautiful girl and we purchased a bottle for 2 francs. That was the greatest wine I ever drank".

Rogov, weren't you on a much different "beach" at nineteen?

Ah yes! I would have to agree - my all time favorite wine is that of a more sentimental nature from a very specific event. And you are right that mood and other factors can and do affect what you feel like drinking at any given time. I guess I posed the question more out of a curiosity of everyone's palate preferences, rather than pose such a black and white question.

Big silky shiraz from the Southern Vales ... lean rieslings from the Clare and Eden Valleys, bursting with citrus and mineral flavours .... pale, zingy sauvignon blancs from the Adelaide Hills ... bony, acidic semillon-sauvignon blanc blends from Margaret River .... restrained, elusive pinot noir from the cool-climate areas of Victoria .... cab savs from Coonawarra that are full of subtle violets, mint, and black currant ... elegant, bone dry champagnes and sparkling wines ... and big ebullient dry-finishing sparkling reds.
