Locating hard-to-find wines

by LBoyd » Mon Oct 11, 2010 2:34 pm

Any suggestions/recommendations for a way to locate hard-to-find wine? I am specifically looking for the following:

Hospices de Beaune
2002
BEAUNE
Premier Cru
Appellation Beaune Crontolee
Cubee Nicolas Rolin

Any assistance with this query will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Winesearcher.com is your best bet.

Only place showing this exact wine is in Argentina, for an insane $200+

For the record, this is a wine from the Hospice de Beaune auction. Cuvee Nicolas Rolin is a comparatively large lot, looks like more than 2 ha of parcels of vine. The Hospice harvests the wine, ferments and barrels it. The barrels are sold at the charity auction. Looks like the buyer of the lot in 2002 was Bouchard Pere and Fils (they're the ones that bottled and sold it).

Thank you. I guess I need to learn more about how to read labels.
Exactly where did you find all the information that you posted?
Thank you.

Well, the Hospices bottlings are a bit more complicated than most. It's tough to say who is producer (HdB or buyer?), compared to other wines.
I was aware of Cuvee Nicolas Rolin (he was one of the HdB founders). I just entered at cellartracker.com to find out who was buyer in 2002 vintage
I got acreage info by googling, Bill Nanson's Burgundy report had info -including where parcels were located, when they were donated (1963), by whom, etc
Good basic how to read a label info from Robin linked on front page on Winelovers:

Laurel,

In case you are new to Burgundies, you should know that most *every* Burgundy is hard to find! This is because there are so very many different wines produced by so many different producers. The larger negociants, like Jadot, Drouhin, and Bouchard, may make enough of their "basic" wines to "go around" to some extent, but even with these the demand easily exceeds the supply in better vintages and the wines can sell out rather quickly.

So in many cases, you just have to become familiar with the quality level of the vintage(s) in general, and the reputations of the various producers, so you can choose something that will be similar, maybe even better!

One of the fascinating things about Burgundy is how different the wines can be, despite all being 100% Pinot Noir. Different soils and different local conditions, as well as different vineyard management and winemaking among the producers, leads to a fascinating spectrum of flavors and styles!

Thanks, Paul:

I am not new to burgandies, but I am definitely not an expert, especially on the nuances of acreage, etc. My need for this particular bottle is that I am trying to replace a bottle that was consumed without permission of the owners....my daughter and her hubby had purchased a bottle on their wedding day in Paris in 2007! Yikes!

I will try to locate, given the information.

Ouch! Good reason to find specific bottle. But a several year old HdB won't be easiest bottling to find. Best bet is to contact Bouchard and/or distributor (are you in US?). If you want, I can put an alert on WS Pro to let me know if a bottle comes up at retail or auction, but it's a longshot.
There are currently several lots (from 1 bottle to 12) of the 2007 Nicolas Rolin bottling (elevage by Jadot in 07) currently on Winebid, if a wedding year wine might ease the pain.

Yes, I am in the U.S. -- in the Florida Panhandle.
You suggest that I contact Bouchard. Is that a distributor, and where can I locate the contact information?
Thank you for your offer to put an alert on WS Pro [may I assume that is the commercial name for a distributor or a forum?]. If a bottle from 2002 is retrievable, I will be anxious to retrieve.

Bouchard Pere & Fils is a large negociant in Beaune (I'm sure there's an English language website)- just make sure it's Pere, not Aine.
I'll look at some Bouchard P& F wines tonight to see who is US (at least NY) importer/distributor.
I meant Winesearcher Pro. The subscription version lets you put on an alert that will tell me if any become available (none currently). If anything comes up I'll email you through this site.
Sorry nothing out there now.

Is this the wine equivalent of replacing the dead goldfish before the kids notice?

Thank you, one and all, for assistance in locating Hospice de Beaune. Wine ordered and delivered. All is well.
