WTN: St. Cosmes Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2009 and more!

White Rhones are not something I am very familiar with, but I thought this blend of Viognier, Marsanne, Rousanne, and Picpoul was quite delicious. Crisp pear fruit with a hint of peach, medium-to-light body, floral notes and a refreshing herbaceoussness. I kept returning to the bottle over the hour. Delicious.

2008 Tissot Selection (Oxidized Savagnin) This was a delicious oxidized style white. Not orange wine per se. I had asked Dagon (at Terroir Wine Bar) if he had any Sherry open yesterday and he suggested this wine. Delicious crisp apple and pear fruit with plenty of acid with a very fine oxidized note. I really like Tissot and love Savagnin!

2008 COS Pithos (Sicillia)
A true orange wine, in amphora and everything. Quite interesting...another sipper compared it to a Beligian lambic beer, which may be the best description I can think of! More fruit and brighter acidity than the Georgian amphora wine which is my only benchmark. I still prefer the Tissot, but very nice.

2008 Lapierre Morgon. Smooth, nice cherry fruit, definitely some funky/earthy/acquired taste notes. Yum...but weird.

2008 Hess Artezin Collection Charbono. Comfirms my strong opinion there should be more Charbono! Delicious earthy and floral notes. All about the earth. I think this comes from the Frediani Vineyard near Calistoga, who also supply the grape to their joint project with Dick Vermeil (Vermeil/On The Edge). The On The Edge wines have more obvious bright cherry fruit, but the Hess wine has its own charms. I like Charbono!

2007 Broc Cellars Carrignan. From Santa Rosa area. Not sure I liked this. Very, very sweet, almost candied/soda poppish. Reminded me quite a bit of a organic Lambrusco I had tried a couple years back. I much prefer his Syrah, which is a major yum wine.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything weird about those infections. They are all too common.

LOL.

I have a pretty strong tolerance for funkyness, but I am not sure how many of my friends would enjoy this wine.

The 2007 Lapierre was pretty clean, though, if I recall.

From QRW (Quarterly Review of Wine) "Dernier Cri"

Funky: adj. a polite way of indicating that a wine smells like old tennis shoes. A negative descriptor in most wine circles, but an oddly (and alarmingly) positive one in others.

Brian,

given the low level of SO2 in Lapierre's wine you oculd get both clean and funky bottles from the same case. It's a bit of a crap shoot unless you can guarantee absolutely perfect (below about 57 degrees) provenance.
