Alex - very enjoyable read. Thanks for posting. Maybe someday I'll have a top-flight Burgundy. I can only imagine.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Nice piece Alex. I hope some day to have the experience of tasting topflight Burgundy.

Question?
Is DRC referring to La Romanee, as I understand it, the smallest AOC in France? Domaine Romanee Conti has many labels.
In the article, when they refer to DRC exactly which wine are they referencing?

DRC is the producer. Named after their premier holding, Romanee Conti. I think in article they are pretty good about saying Domaine de Romanee Conti when they mean producer, Romanee Conti when they mean the monopole vineyard (one exception is when they say a glass of DRC will cost you XXX, and the figure is based on the DRC RC- the Echezeaux wouldn't cost that much).

La Romanee is a different grand cru vineyard, not as esteemed, usually Bouchard is only producer I think.

It’s interesting to find out that wine importers actually sell this wine in “mixed cases”. Still can’t afford it. Alex- Thanks for posting the article.

Dale,

I visited the Domaine Ligier-Belair in January. They are the owners of La Romanée. The confusion arises because they had a marketing agreement with Bouchard. This came to an end with the 2002 or 3 vintage.

I tasted the wine. It is very good indeed but I did come away feeling that its rarity possibly has more to do with its price than its intrinsic quality.

All the best,
Alex

Liger Belair's wines are very good indeed. Even their Village VR, Clos du Chateau is of good value!

The best I tried from DRC is Romanee St. Vivant. Wish I had a chance to taste a La Tache or Romanee-Conti of DRC, I know I'm just dreamin...

For all intents and purposes Domaine de la Romanée-Conti does not exist.

I would not go that far. The Romanee-Conti wine itself is certainly "unobtanium" (on the other hand, I have actually seen a bottle of their Montrachet at retail), but at least some of the others are occasionally out there. I was lucky enough to get a couple of bottles ofRichebourg back when it was not totally outrageous, and some of the others have been opened at tastings by very generous enthusiasts.

I've had DRC Echezeaux, GE, RSV , Richebourg from generous friends (thanks to Jacques, for one!). Certainly rare, but they exist, and are drunk. DRC Montrachet, La Tache, and Romanee-Conti I've just seen bottles (missed my chance at La Tache last month). The only DRC I doubt the existence of is the Cuvée Blochet Vosne 1er- if I haven't seen it, I don't trust it. I don't believe in germs, atoms, or electromagnetic fields. :)

I have drank the Cuvée Blochet Vosne 1er not once but twice! It definitely exists.

Oh, so I'm supposed to take YOUR word for it. I suppose I'm supposed to believe in "atoms" because you and a bunch of books (that aren't the Bible) say they exist? What do you take me for?

If you won't take my word on atoms will you take Lipton's?

Not a freakin' chance. Dale's had dinner with me on two occasions. He knows better than to believe anything I have to say. And if you think that Dale's a tea party member, well... I've got this bridge (lightly used)...

Apologies for interrupting a jovial tone but my 2c...

DRC's wines are always obtainable, its just a matter of money. (And if you say it quickly, it sounds easy... :-D )

Lots of DRC appears at Auction in Australia, and a local restaurant in Brisbane (Ortiga) has everthing from the Duvault Blochet to the la Romanee Conti. But you will need nearly $A1000 for the former, and nearly $A20,000 for a good vintage of the latter.

I'm going to Ortiga on Thursday night..I wonder if the lads will be tempted...

cheers

Better still, marry a woman (or a man if it's allowed in your country) with pots of money.

The only one I have had a taste of is the Romanee St. Vivant but it was an enticing introduction.

I always thought "La Tache" would be a great name for a cat.
