WTN: Wow - A Sauvignon Blanc I truly enjoyed!

by Howie Hart » Wed Sep 29, 2010 9:06 am

2006 Richard Bourgeois Sancerre - Over the years I have been repeatedly underwhelmed by SB. I've had a few that were OK, but nothing that rocked my boat. I opened this the other night with poached chicken breast, squash and green beans, not knowing what to expect. Visually, medium gold with a very slight green tint. I opened it too cold, but as it warmed in the glass, a complexity of aromas developed: citrus (lime and grapefruit), anise and a very slight hint of smokiness. Medium-long and full in the mouth, good acid structure and finishing with traces of grapefruit rind (in a good way). This wine displayed none of those traits I find objectionable (cat pee, gooseberries, etc). I enjoyed this over two nights, with little change the second day. I don't recall when or where I bought this bottle or the price. I have another 2006 Sancerre in my cellar and am looking forward to trying it.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Sancerre will do that to you Howie. A few Graves also, but I am not a big SB fan either.
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Check www.wine-searcher.com

Found a store in the US that sells the SB Sulz 04 of vineyard Gross. (The Corkscrew Wine Emporium). Damn cheap as well. Same price I pay at the vineyard in Austria for a new one. 2004 should be perfect to drink now as well

Don't be too critical. They have there place, but it is not as a "summer sipper".
They need goat cheese, olives, hummus, celery, and are perfect with oysters!
All of the above is applicable to Sancerre, Touraine, White Bordeaux, and Graves.
The last three can be incredible values.
