WTN: Wines with baseball

by Salil » Thu Sep 23, 2010 11:24 pm

Along with the Yankees game.

2009 Johann Geil Bechtheimer Heilig-Kreuz Scheurebe Kabinett
Bright tropical fruit, herbs, a bit of tarter grapefruit and melon with nice sweetness and a pleasant acid spine keeping it in check. Very nice.

2009 Louis Jadot Moulin-à-Vent Clos de Rochegrès Château des Jacques
Not really sure what to make of this. Starts out pleasant with bright red fruits, cinnamon and other baking spices and touches of earth, but then the oak very quickly takes over and this becomes woody as hell. With even more air this settles down into an equilibrium of bright fruit accented by spicy oak notes - tasty enough with pork, but not particularly exciting and I was struggling to reconcile this with the jawdropping praise I've read for this wine.

2007 Michel Gahier Arbois Grands Vergers (Trousseau)
Cliff Notes version: This is Beaucastel Lite!
In full: Stunning aromatics that really remind me of an older CdP - there's a fair bit of brett giving a funky saddle leather character over red fruited flavours, warm earth, herbal touches and gentle smoky and stony aspects that develop with air. A lightweight in the mouth, fresh and nervy with bright acids and grainy tannins on the back end beneath fresh fruit and leathery elements. Lovely to drink with a great aromatic profile - this is something I definitely need more of.

Since it's Jadot, I doubt it.

Nice Scheurebe.

Did you get a Crush or Chambers Street delivery yesterday or something?

Wine and baseball? The Visigoths are at the gate!
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?

plate...The Visigoths are at the Plate. The Romans are in the field. Theodosius is pitching - and hodling, late in the game. Unfortunately the Roman bullpen is very weak.

Does anyone have a bullpen to keep the Yankees from another Series? Seriously, only the Phillies have the offense and pitching to challenge the Yankees and their bullpen is weak. I am still not sure about this wine and baseball pairing. I might have to give it a go.

The Yankees bullpen is also quite weak until you get to the (rapidly aging) Mariano. Joba Chamberlain is not nearly all he was cracked up to be.

I'm originally a cricket fan. Be glad I am not insisting on tea breaks in the 7th inning. :P

Alsatian sparkling wine.
But make it brown rather than yellow mustard :)

When I was a much younger lad, my parents would go away in the summer and leave me to my summer job. No one in my family liked brussel sprouts but me. I have fond memories of watching the All-Star game with a couple of dog, saurkraut, and brussel sprouts! Lets not forget the beer!

I remember walking in a park in Vancouver BC many years ago and we sat down to watch a cricket game and after an eternity plus tea time and the game was still going on we decided that watching grass grow was much more interesting. :(

I've learned to enjoy the game of Cricket. With the high scoring, Cricket is to Baseball as Basketball is to Soccer, and the field is 360 degrees instead of diamond shaped, but both games are fun especially with the right fans in the bleachers.

Cheers,
Bill

Indeed, Bill. What's not to love about a sport that has a position called silly mid off? And of course playing for the ashes in Test matches is also quite amusing.
