New grape variety for me.. had it in a very nice Rose from Cantina Farro last night with a simple paella. How common is it??

Don't come across it much, the only one I've paid attention to/bought is La Sibilla's from Campi Flegrei. Oliver McCrum imports it, and I've found it to be a lovely smoky, lightweight wine that's fantastic value.

Cantina Farro...is that the little Italian joint in Balboa we both went to once upon a time? Sounds familiar....

PIEDIROSSO:
Red-wine grape grown in Campania, Italy. Has several synonym names including Palombina, Pere'e Pallummo and Strepparossa. Used as a blending wine in the Naples area product known as "Lachryma Christi del Vesuvio" along with Olivella and Aglianico grapewines.

Piedrosso is the principle variety in Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio, and if you see Mastroberardino's LCdV, that is a wine well worth trying.

Agree completely and its 100% Piedirosso. Some Vesuvio's blend in some Aglianico. The 2004 Mastroberardino drank very well through 2009 but fell off fairly rapidly this year. Was a great QPR but drink up any left.

The 2005 was doing very nicely in April of this year. But I'd expect it might do something similar to what you describe with the 2004.

I am not familiar with Cantina Farro, but am glad that you enjoyed the wine.

Anyway, to help answer you question: Piedirosso is the primary grape in the red version of Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio (the white Lacryma utilizes Coda di Volpe). It is also frequently blended with Aglianico in some other Campanian wines, including the Costa d'Amalfi reds and Falerno di Massico.

Besides the Mastroberardino LCdV that Ryan and Brian mentioned already, Terredora di Paolo (the other estate that was created when Mastroberardino split due to philosophical differences in the family) also makes a good LCdV - the 2006 was very good two years ago. Two Aglianico/Piedirosso blends that I have liked have been the 2005 Marisa Cuomo Costa d'Amalfi Furore Rosso and the 2004 Villa Matidle Falerno del Massico, which really has nothing in common with the famous Roman wine Falernum, from which it derives its name.

The 2004 Mastroberardino LCdV was good back in 2007, but it didn't seem like a wine for long-term aging. I haven't tasted the 2005.

I think it was by the Newport pier.. would have to double-check next time I'm down there.. :?

From an article in “Wine News”- “Campania-The World’s Original Vineland”, by Tom Maresca;

"Piedirosso is a reclamation project here," explains Domenico Ocone, one of the finest producers in the Taburno zone. His very impressive proprietary blend Calidonio is made mostly from piedirosso with about 15 percent aglianico. "The farmers hate piedirosso. They say, you plant it here, and its fruit grows [15 feet] away." Winemakers prize the variety, however, because of its deep color, good tannins and bright acidity, coupled with rich, fruit basket aromas and complex flavors. In fact, several producers - Villa Matilde and Ocone among them - are now bottling a single varietal Piedirosso.
