WTN: Ricossa Barbera D'Asti Superiore 2007

by Bruce Hayes » Mon Sep 20, 2010 9:10 am

Piedmont

Dark purple in the glass.

Black cherry, black licorice, smoke and earth on the nose.

Medium weight, tarry, black cherry, blackberries, blueberries, spicy, earth, drying, tangy, high acidity, juicy, chocolate, very rich, big structre.

Toward the end of the bottle the acidity kicked up a notch, but the fruit kept pace.

Tangy, subtle fruit on the fairly long finish.

One of the better wines I have had in a while.

Purchased at $16.95 (Canadian) and worth every penny.

Bruce, I notice you always include color in you TNs. I used to do that too, but stopped for a couple of reasons. First I don't think that color affects the quality of wine in any way. Secondly, with all the technovin (winemaking technology) that goes on these days, color can be manipulated any way the winemaker wants. Just an opinion I wanted to float.

Cheers, Carl

Hmm, not sure why I do that other than it is one the first things I notice about a wine.

I kinda like it that TNs, such as Bruce's, include the color of the wine. It gives me some perspective as to the state of the wine. For example, in my view a pale red/orangish 2007 Barbera would have struck me as odd (others may differ, as my experience with Barbera have been close to Bruce's description) and I may question some possible provenance issue, or, as pointed out, whether it may have been due to the winemaker's intention and,if so, why?

I wasn't thinking so much about Barbera or this partiular TN, and I was about other wines. For example the color of Pinot Noir can be all over the spectrum, and some of the best ones have the lighter color.
