WTN: Many Facets of 1995 Corison Cabernet

by Diane (Long Island) » Mon Sep 20, 2010 8:48 am

I've long been a fan of Cathy Corison's Cabernet Sauvignons, and have failed to hold onto my bottles long enough to drink one that is mature. For my taste, I did it with this bottle.

The nose was striking at first with unfamiliar aromas. There was fig, tree bark, tea leaves, and dark cherries, and when you think you have them all, there are florals. On the palate, the tannins are soft, the dark fruit is fresh, it's earthy, tarry, more of those lovely florals. Blind, I would have said Barolo (I hate blind, it always makes me feel stupid), but it's a feminine and elegant California Cab, and an excellent dinner wine enjoyed with filet mignon, mustardy green beans, and salad caprese.

Diane:

Was this the Kronos Vineyard "Reserve" botling or the Napa Valley?

I have one bottle of 2000 Napa Valley (an iffy vintage, apparantly) and an earlier bottle was definitely delicious but I am tempted to wait now for this one.

Thanks, Diane, for your notes. I had the pleasure of tasting Cathy Corison's wines at the winery in February. I did not by any since my dance card was full but I intend to.

Brian - this was the basic Cab. I've had the 1997 Kronos, and I have the 1999 Kronos tucked away. I like them all, and often wonder if it is worth the extra tarriff for the Kronos. I don't have any experience with the 2000 vintage, but Cathy has a way of producing fine wines regardless of vintage.

Jon - I tasted at the winery last August, and I usually come away with her Gewurztraminer, but this time they were sold out. I buy the Cabs at retail when I get home - easier and a few dollars less.
