Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Sauvignon Blanc Poggio alle Gazze Milleviti 2007
Same as a bottle a few weeks ago. Quite elegant for the vintage. Touch of CO2. Soft white pepper to variety-typical fruit of medium complexity. Medium acidity, faint bitter note. Holding up well in the fridge. Rating: 88
Adrien Mathier L’Ambassadeur 2007
Thanks to Oliver. Mathier’s top Pinot Noir. Soft purple hue to the ruby-black colour. Freshly nutty oak. Quite intense, somewhat metallic fruit (unfortunately do not like the metallic streak this clone produces). Fair enough body. Some minerality. Medium-flavourful, firm acidity. Some nutty oak-induced tannin. Medium-plus length. Touch of marzipan (oak) to the fruit with airing, along with a little more raspberry sweetness. All in all, this could be more complex and characterful. Rating: 88(+?)
J. Hofstätter Barthenau Pinot Nero Vigna S. Urbano 2000
Thanks to Oliver. From over 60-year-old vines in the Mazon (or Meczan?) vineyard. Medium-pale raspberry-ruby-red. Tender warm milk chocolate over quite complex, nicely subtle and fairly finesseful, prettily fruity, merely softly hazelnutty-oaky (Oliver says this was aged in 100% new oak, and that he thought it very oaky at release). Elegant, no heaviness whatsoever. Really a bit light, but so harmonious and nicely mature, it hardly matters. Ripe and round acidity. Very long on the finish. Improved with airing. Rating: 91-
Greetings from Switzerland, David.
