Jojo just got back from the Medoc Marathon and invited for lunch at his store to try some of the new arrivals and, of course, the obligatory Bordeaux.
Tua Rita Lodano Bianca Toscana 2007 - A blend of Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurztraminer. Very light straw. Good floral aroma, no doubt due to the Riesling and Gewurz. Quite rich but very dry. Mostly pear and melon notes. A little too heavy for my taste.
Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2004 - This bottle developed a small leak and was considered unfit for sale. So we drank it. Straight from the bottle it had a good fragrance, more meaty than anything. I decided to let it sit in the glass for about 2 hours before trying it again as it was too closed to appreciate. The tannins were very strong. Ripe fruit, maybe the sweetest fruit I've had in a Barolo. Definitely in the modern style. Complex palate with chocolate, stewed plums and just a little sweaty. No tar and roses at this point. Aside from the tannins, a real easy wine to appreciate and drink. Leave alone for at least another 5 years, but I thought this was outstanding.
Vieux Chateau Certan 2002 - As Greg was at this lunch, it was unthinkable not to have a Bordeaux. Very young, deep purple. Very sweet nose. A little spicy. Rich, fleshy and quite soft. Smoke and tobacco leaf. Still primary and not too complex but a real easy, charming wine to drink. Needs a couple of years to peak but can be drunk with pleasure now. Excellent.
We finished with:
Armagnac Baron de Sigognac 1948 - Strong chocolate, a little cough syrup at the finish and a slightly cheesy, rancio flavor throughout. A great way to end lunch.
Many thanks to Jojo for inviting and congratulations on finishing the marathon!
