WTN: 2002 Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Les Chaignots

by Diane (Long Island) » Mon Sep 13, 2010 9:45 am

Yesterday was my son's birthday. He lives in California, but there was no reason that my husband and I shouldn't celebrate his birth....a mere 39 years ago.

I bought 2 beautiful, thick veal chops, and my plan was to open a Barolo, but I had some Chanterelles that I purchased on Saturday, and that combo, with some reduced Port and cream, spoke to me of Burgundy.

The Chevillon had beautiful floral aromas. The palate was vibrant, high toned with juicy red fruits and soft tannins, leaving a lingering anise taste on the tongue. It was a pretty good match to the veal, but I think my usual veal and Barolo pairing works better. It didn't matter -the wine was delicious.

Ahppy birthday to your son!

Thanks for the note! I got a few of these puppies nicely resting for future days. Maybe I'll pop these when my son is 39....but that will be a much more ancient bottle by then :)

Thanks for the note Diane. You have given me the strength to look past my '02 Roncieres. I can't believe they would be any more advanced than the Chaignots. The NSG village on the other hand...

thanks Diane. I have a few of these, sound like they're pretty approachable. There's never a reason not to toast one you love, whether they're there or not.

David and Dale - the wine is definitely drinkable and enjoyable now, but I hope to keep my hands off my one other bottle. I think it will be a real beauty with some more age.

Thanks for the notes Diane. Well worth drinking for the occasion.

Although, I have different, but same vintage, Chevillon bottlings (Les Perrieres and Les Saint-Georges), I'm excited to read a good 2002 data point of a bottle from the producer. My bottles are in my offsite storage, I guess I'll leave them there for now.

Ramon - I'm waiting on my Les Perrieres, thinking that it would require more time than Les Chaignots.

I think most Chevillonheads probably think of the comparative ageability of the 1ers as something like
Chaignots, Bousselots (most forward)
Pruliers, Roncieres
Perrieres
Vaucrains, Cailles
LSG (most backward)

You might get someone who quibbles, but I don't think you'd find anyone who thinks Pruliers is a better ager than Les St George, etc. That said, I've had nice 20 year old Roncieres, Chaignots, etc.

(edited to correct spelling of Bousselots)

Chevillonheads? Far out, man. I hope I won’t have to wear a tie-dye to have to be in a tasting. The old one’s simply too tight for me to put on now. Thanks for the drinking hierarchy info, Dale.

I pretty much agree with Dale's assesment, except that I tend to find Vaucrains requires more time than Les St. Georges. Of course both require more time than most of us have on this earth.
