Botrytis Chard. Question

by Jim Grow » Fri Sep 10, 2010 9:02 pm

I just finished a 2008 Travis Chard. --very nice for $13 but non-botrytis, and was wondering if anyone besides Dom. Bon Gran makes a dry botrytis chardonnay. My last Bon Gran was a 1996 and it was fabulous. Just curious?

By Bon Gran do you mean Bongran/Thevenet in Macon? I think Guilemot-Michel (Sp?) and Valette also make botrytized wines in Macon. For that matter, I think quite a few Cote d'Or Burgs in really ripe vintages have at least a little botrytis.

Don't know. But Bob Lindquist (Qupe) made a killer botrytised roussanne from Alban fruit in, I think, 1996. These types of wines are usually one-offs.

Rene Michel also in the Macon. They can be very unusual, and you wouldn't want to drink them too regularly, but I really enjoy the edginess of such a wine, very much out of the mainstream.

Thanks all for the input. That was a Dom. Bongran by Thevenet but not their Cuvee Emile?? I'll have to look into the other Macon producers mentioned.

Jed Steele has made a late harvest Chardonnay in past years. Can be cloying after a few big sips. I have a Lioco Charles Heintz Late Harvest Chardonnay that I look forward to opening.
