WTN: 1999 Clos du Marquis

by Jenise » Mon Sep 06, 2010 1:57 pm

Wanted a Bordeaux last night for a lazy evening of sipping wine on the couch and eventually enjoying with a tomato bisque. Chose well: not decanted, the '99 CdM opened up quickly in the glass exhibiting classic CdM/LLC all-black fruit with a bit of cigar box. The tannins melted away as we sipped but the wine never dropped fruit, indicating there'd be no rush to finish remaining bottles if indeed I had any more, which I don't, but I wouldn't hold on too long. Drinks well now.

Haven't had any of the CdM.. but maybe I should give them a try.. but we did have the 2001 LLC last night with buffalo tartar, duck and grilled pork chops. Awesome.. with star anise/tar/red and black fruit on a huge finish..

You should definitely try a CdM. Though considered a second of LLC, as you probably know the wine isn't the cast off barrels of LLC but a separate and good vineyard in it's own right. It's not LLC though (indeed, what is?). What an interesting dinner you had--you're dining very well these days.

WineX has the 2005 at a reasonable price, so I'll give it a shot.

Last night's dinner was at The Cellar in Fullerton, an old-school French restaurant that just hired Bouchon's chef from Santa Barbara, so we wanted to give it a shot. The pork chop was the best I've ever had, maybe the best piece of pork I've had.. the glaze/sauce was just amazing. I don't think the kid (he's 28) has put his mark on the place, and for me, Marche Moderne in Costa Mesa still has the best French food around....never heavy or ponderous, always clean lines and flavors. But, yes, we have been eating well.
Cheers, Jim

1999s are drinking so well now. I'm still sitting on 6 bottles of the 2001 Clos du Marquis. Last check was one year ago tomorrow, and it was almost, but not quite there. I will be checking in again soon.

This wine was the first Bordeaux I ever bought. Just thinking about that moment makes me shiver.

Is that an "oh my Bordeaux is wonderful" shiver, or a "oh dear, there goes my wallet" shiver?

I opened a bottle of the '98 CdM in July and it is holding up just as well as your '99. But the price has gone up a lot in recent vintages. Costco had the '05 priced at $54...
Good, textbook Bordeaux.

Don, checked with a friend who has the 00, and he said he last tasted one in May and that it was still improving. He'll wait about three years to open another.

Really hard to tell with Bordeaux, isn't it, re pricing? There was the period of insanity, then the period of reasonableness, then along came the 05 and everybody got greedy again. Haven't been buying so haven't been pricing, but I'm presuming that prices floated back down with the less-heralded 06's and 07's.
