WTN: 2005 Sequel Syrah

by Jenise » Thu Sep 02, 2010 11:29 am

From Washington State's Long Shadows program, an update: this wine's asleep. If you own it, leave it alone. All you get right now is a fine nose and a mouthful of tannins.

<homer>Mmmm, Long Shadows!!</homer> I really liked the 2004, tasted 2 1/2 years ago and probably before it started to close up. I wish I had more than just the one. ;)

The 04 is a great bottle, one I think could/should outlast the riper 05 and which is more svelte than the huge 03.

Btw, file this one away in the "I did it for the right reasons but it didn't work out like I thought" file: this bottle was taken to a friends' home for a special evening. They are people who love wine and thought they were experts back in the day they had more cash around and routinely bought Silver Oak for special occasions. Their taste hasn't evolved since then--they're not geeks and they'll never be Europhiles--where I probably won't open my aged Bordeauxs for them knowing they like bigger, younger wines, I have never hesitated to share something like a Sequel. So imagine my head-scratching amazement last night when after our dinner of just-caught Dungeness crab, my friend brought out a hot berry crisp and this Syrah to pair with it! Ai yi yi!
