WBR: MattKramer On Wine

by TomHill » Tue Aug 31, 2010 11:51 am

I have to say that probably the only reason I continue to subscribe to the WineSphincter (been a charter subscriber since Vol1#1) is to read MattKramer's column. They sometimes seem a bit contrived, but they're always a good read; oftentimes sorta controversial.
I was hesitant to order this new book, a "Matchless" Collection of Columns/Essays/Observations by "America's Most Original & Lucid Wine Writer" (his words...not mine....and, unlike AliceF***ing's subtitle...most definitely TFIC) as I assumed it was just a tired retread of his WS Columns.
But it is not (least what I can tell). I've read about 1/3'rd of the book now and only one was a WS column that I recall reading. Maybe I've forgotten some of them that I've read, though (has nothing to do w/ old age...be assured!!), but, if so, they're worth rereading again I suppose.
The last chapter is an article on AngeloGaja that he wrote for the NewYorker amgazine, but was killed afore it appeared in print.
Anyway....if you like MattKramer's writings...and even if you don't...this book is a highly recommended read. One that you can pick up & put down and read in short bursts of insight.

Very droll. There were some huge gaps with complete regions missed out.

"America's Most Original & Lucid Wine Writer"

He actually wrote that about himself? Very original. Modest guy!

And one who has a sense of humor (sadly lacking in much of today's wine world).

Well, Joe..as I said...I took it as TFIC. Maybe not, though.

I only knew "The F*** I Care" - which didn't make sense given the context!

Although I never thought of Matt Kramer as a particularly tounge-in-cheek kind of guy.

Hi Tom,

I recently cancelled my subscription to the Speculator. I have to admit the only thing I really miss is Kramer's column. I usually read it first and it set the tone for the rest of the magazine.
