Help Needed to Identify a Painting

by Daniel Rogov » Sat Aug 28, 2010 5:08 pm

A reader has inquired about the painting attached to this post. I have seen reproductions of the painting many times in Italian restaurants but as much as it has pleased me, never thought to inquire about its origins. Any information about the artist, the name of the painting, or other related information will be much appreciated.

At a guess I would suggest that the couple is Italian and the setting Tuscan as the bottle the older man is holding is wrapped in a straw fiasco as were many of the wines of Chianti. Beyond that.......

Thanks
Rogov

The wonders of cyberspace. I posted my request on the my side of the forum forum about an hour ago and thanks to Alex, already have a response and even a link.

The painting is in the style of Eugenio Zampighi (1859-1944), and the oil, painted on a wood panel is entitled "Old Couple In Kitchen". A link to the auction house that had the painting can be found at

Some speculate that the unisgned painting was done by Zampighi himself but further research indicates that the painting, which is not signed, was most probably done by one of Zampighi's students using several of the models that his teacher used on a regular basis.

Glad you got a reply, Rogov. I was just curious why the old boy seems so possessive of that Chianti.

Robin,

My guess is that he is half-drunk and holding the bottle so tightly as a sign of affection for the wine. What I especially like in the painting is how genuinely affectionate his wife seems to be.

I think she is just trying to get her share of the wine! I've seen that covetous gleam in the eyes of my near and dear!
