Wine Focus for September: What shall we taste?

by Robin Garr » Sat Aug 28, 2010 9:04 am

Did I see someone in the Beaujolais section suggest a look at Northwestern Spain, from Bierzo to Albariño? Is that too narrow for worldwide accessiblity? Any other ideas? Let's hear it, and see if we can't reach a good consensus before the the new month begins on Wednesday.

(We've done Rioja in January 2010 and January 2009, but at a glance I haven't seen "Spain (Other)." For reference, here's the list of past monthly topics:

I thought the plan was Riesling.

D'oh! I didn't know we had a plan, but I'm good with Riesling, too. German only, or a world of Riesling?

(It has been a little under two years since we did "Nov 2008: Riesling - It's all about style," but that certainly doesn't rule out doing it again, perhaps with some specific perspective.)

Dig up the topic for what to do in August & I noted that I would be happy to "host" Riesling in September, with a focus on Germany.

I think Riesling from the world would add more diversity to the subject matter. I have a few from the Northwest and Southern Hemisphere that I would love to try.

Ah, okay, sorry, David and Salil, I do remember that. I think NW Spain emerged as a sub-tread in the current Beaujolais discussion, but it sounds like Riesling took chronological precedence. And it's crossing my mind that a world of Riesling would afford us the opportunity for some interesting comparisons.

Maybe someone would even open some Spanish riesling.

Or is Waltraud riesling not "true" riesling?

Does anybody but Miguel Torres bottle it? I confess ignorance: Is it a trade name, a Riesling clone or cross, or welsch/walschriesling/Riesling Italico, which I understand to be no more a Riesling than Petite Sirah is a Syrah.

We did earmark Riesling (German, I think) for September.

However, I would support doing North Western Spain in October, if the availability is wide enough to get a good response; even here, a bit of driving around is needed to get a good selection. This area seems to be an exciting source of both whites and reds of distinctive character which most wine-lovers have only become aware of in the last handful of years.

I've found some Bierzo and a few Albariños around here, Tim, although Martin Codax having cut a mega-deal with E&J Gallo does make me hope it won't be commercialized.

Would you take the liberty of posting me a PM or Email reminder of this toward the end of September, Tim? I think it's a fair idea, certainly at least to throw out on the table for discussion.

Excellent Tim.

Just back from the mountains...snow, sleet, cold, very poor roads. Should have stayed home!
Sure was not riesling weather up there. Should be good month eh. A Petaluma for sure!
