Wine ID Caps

by Kevin F » Fri Aug 27, 2010 10:53 am

I was at a local fair and came across these wine caps that ID your bottles of wine in a wine rack. They look alot better than tags that hang down from the bottles and lets me inventory my wines. How do other people ID there wines in a rack?

Hey Kevin - I don't. The cellar may be somewhat disorganized, but it rarely takes more than a couple of minutes to find what I want.

I find tags/caps to be a wasteful expense.

Like David, I find such accessories rather a waste. I have a rather large cellar and find that snips of plain white paper, my computer printer and waterproof Scotch tape do just fine for me.

Daniel,

I used to keep a note pad in the cellar & would keep track of what rack or box I loaded things into. Stopped even doing that a while back. I'm too lazy!

I received some of the tags that hang down from the neck as a gift some time ago. Here's how I use them: I may have six bottles from a particular producer and three of them might be signed by the winemaker or vineyard owner. If all six are tucked away and I want to get an unsigned one, I'll look for the ones without the tag because the tag means it's signed; I don't move a bunch of bottles and end up with the wrong one. I tend to save signed bottles for unique occasions. Other than that, I pretty much know what wines I have and where they are.

Kevin - what do these caps look like?

Here is a picture of the wine cap as requested by Jon. They look like mini wine barrels,I use them on my wine rack that is built into my kitchen cabinets. They dress up the look of the bottles in my kitchen.

Kevin, welcome to the forum. This is a great place to learn about wine. I have been here for seven or eight years and I learn something new every day!

There is not really a lot of info on that ID cap Kevin. I mean, it certainly looks nice, but I kind of like the look of the variety of bottles in my upstairs cabinet. As for my "cellar", I am not nearly as organized as some of these other chaps and would hardly spend money on something that didn't provide more information.

For wine rack in a rather cool kitchen I suppose they do add a more formal look. My cellar is in the basement & looks more like a construction site than a formal room.

Welcome, Kevin!! I'd be interested in knowing more about which bottles you have those caps on and what types of wine you enjoy drinking.

The caps look very nice but they're not informative enough for me, either. Like David, my wine's mostly in the basement so the decorative aspect would be lost on me.

Kevin - I didn't recognize you as new to the forum in my last post so - Welcome!
I do think these caps would look smart in the setting in your kitchen that you mentioned. While I probably might not buy them, they do look good. If I'd been given them, I'm sure I could find a use if only to mark the sections of my cellar by wine type. Thanks for posting the picture.

Keven, Hi and Indeed, Welcome to the Forum....

As others have said, those "caps" are attractive but if one has a major collection, either in a wine refrigerator or a wine cellar or if they're lucky enough to live in a year-round cool climate, a dedicated closet, more information is generally required. My own listings (as I said earlier on small pieces of white paper printed from my computer and attached to bins includes at least the following: Name of winery, name or variety of the wine, sometimes the wine growing region and the vintage year.

e.g. Mondavi, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, 2001
Chateau Lascomes, 2005
Capcanes, Peraj haAbib, Monsant, 2003

I love those hanging tags and use them religiously because, like so many here, I put vintage, winery name and whichever is the most pertinent between grape or style or region on each tag. Burg, CdP, Rotie, Bandol, syrah, pinot, cab, merit and Bdx just for instance are all names you'll find on tags in in my cellar.

I do too. I stick them on, and pray that I'll be able to find them later!

Hi Kevin

welcome to the forum...

I can see the cap as illustrated might "dress up the look of the bottles in my kitchen" but I can't see that they play any useful purpose in ID'ing bottles of wine in a wine rack or in inventoring wines.

The word 'Cabernet' on its own is pretty useless, it doesn't distinguish country, winery or vintage.

I've got space for only 20 bottles in my kitchen rack and they're wines ready for grabbing. But I have several different varieties including Torres Vina Sol Paradella from Spain of which I bought 3 in a sale and now have just one left and may not buy again. How likely am I to have in stock 3 Paradello wine ID caps? Suppose I'd bought 4?

Now, how many of these ID caps would I need to cover all the bottles. I bought a case of Montepulciano on sale most of which are in the rack, I've got a Merlot there and a Pinotage ...

The sheer number of combinations of different varieties I could have in that ever changing rack small rack would mean I'd have to have -- well how many of these ID Caps? And how much would they cost?

And in my other racks which hold much more?

If I decide to keep only Cabernet in the kitchen rack because I bought 20 Cabernet wine ID caps then I don't need the ID caps to inventory them ...

No, as the Dragon's would say "I can't invest in that, I'm out!"

I'm sure whoever makes these only makes (and drinks) the usual suspects--grapes that Gallo, for instance, makes wine from and is unfamiliar with the larger wine universe geeks inhabit.

Geez, they could have covered it all with 'Red' and 'White'.....
