WTN: Not worth saving (2000 Willi Schaefer)

by David M. Bueker » Wed Aug 25, 2010 7:08 am

Opened a bottle of the 2000 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spatlese last night, and while I was initially rather pleased with its smoky, brown sugared apple & fig aromas and flavors it quickly developed an off/chemical element and an extreme bitterness on the finish. I was expecting a rather advanced wine, as the 2000s, compromised by the weather as they were, have been on the quickly maturing side, but the way this wine jumped down the rabbit hole was more than a little disappointing. I got maybe 30 minutes of decent drinking out of it before the rest had to go down the sink.

Luckily only 1 more bottle of this in the cellar, and otherwise only a very small sample of 2000s resting peacefully in the name of science.

I recollect that the auction version of this wine wasn't particularly good last fall at your place - so not too surprised to hear about this. Better out of the cellar than in at this stage though...

There have been a few 2000s that I thought were worth holding. I was wrong.
