WTN: Schrock muscat '08...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Aug 23, 2010 9:36 am

Tried last night w/ my tomatoe:
1. HeidiSchrock muscat (13%; 60% GelberMuskateller/30% SauvignonBlanc/10% MuscatOttonel) Rust/Burgenland 2008: Light gold color; rather low-key Muscat/floral/fragrant somewhat earthy/musky slight valve oil/mineral nose; soft/lush dry rather bitter low-key Muscat some earthy/stoney/mineral slight steely/metallic/tangy flavor; med. rather bitter/metallic/tangy somewhat earthy/stoney low-key Muscat finish; pleasant enough nose more along the lines of a Malavasia but rather bitter on the palate. $21.00

BP:
1. GelberMuscat is none other than MuscatFrontignan or Muscat a PetitesGrains...the standard version of in-your-face Muscat. Somehow, they managed to beat down that intense Muscat character in this wine. Pleasant enough wine but too bitter on the palate for my taste.

Having had the chance to taste a few earlier vintages of the Schrock Muscat, I need to agree that this is pretty restrained stuff. Too much, actually: not really what I'm looking for in a Muscat. Is it the house style and/or terroir?

Sorry, Joe...got know idea if it's the house style or the terroir. Since the intense fragrance of Muscat is so pervasive from one growing area
to another, I would guess it's the house style.
But it's pretty mild-mannered for a Muscat.

I wonder if that's why she's blending in SBL, to diminish the raw Muscat quality?

I love that wine.

It could be, Oliver...but I didn't find a very strong SB character in the wine.
