WTN: My new favorite CdP Blanc?

by Warren T » Mon Aug 23, 2010 1:31 am

2005 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc La Crau.
Exotic and powerful. Silky viscous mouthfeel. Floral notes, melon, peach, lemon curd, chestnut. Acidity keeps it lively. Nice depth as well as length.

Warren, that sounds a lovely wine such as I always hope for when I open a bottle of CndP blanc.

Alas, even from the "best" estates it is maddening wine - into and out of dumb phases often with an oxidative edge. A tasting of CndP blanc a few years ago was one of the most disappointing in my experience with only a couple of really good wines out of about 10 and the organiser refused to accept the scheduled payment for the occasion. A tasting of 4 vintages of Beaucastel blanc organised by the same person was much better viewtopic.php?f=3&t=24040&p=205680&hilit=ghysens#p205680 but I guess that on this occasion he chose the vintages carefully to avoid disappointment.
