Last week I found a 2006 Edmunds St. John Bone Jolly Rose in the cellar that I had lost track of. So I decided to open the '06 as well as an '09 to see how a few years of age had treated the older wine & re-check the status of the '09.
The '06 was still holding quite well. It was more subdued than it was a while ago (it's always been my favorite version of this wine), but hte strawberry and watermelon elements were still there, if pushed further to the background by a rather strong, chalky element. It's still good, but needs to be drunk up IMO.
My bottle of the '09 was an improvement on the two bottles I opened a while back. The fruit was the dominant element (a little more tart than I recall the '06 being on release), and the wine was a refreshing accompaniment to a Thai green curry I whipped up to use some of my weekly CSA veggies. There was a hint of tar/rubber, but I could have been imagining it, as I was definitely looking for it. It certainly did not detract. For what it's worth, this bottle was from a few I got through Chambers St earlier in the year.
