Should I age this Rioja further?

by Jim Grow » Sun Aug 22, 2010 5:23 pm

I have a couple bottles of Marques de Murrieta 2005 Reserva Finca Ygay and was wondering if I can open one soon or should let them rest. These are not the Gran Reserva. What do you all think?

Jim, who is the importer? I am not an exporter on Spanish wines by any stretch of the imagination, but I do know the good importers and that would tell me a lot.

Jim, Hi...

Following is my tasting note for the wine in question, that along with the projected drinking window.

Best
Rogov

Marques de Murrieta, Ygay, Gran Reserva Especial, Rioja Finca, 2005: As always a blend of Tempranilla, Mazuelo and Garnacha but in the name of change from different vineyards than those relied on in the past and thus a somewhat different wine. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft tannins and somewhat generous acidity and a marked influence of the wood in which it aged. Opens in the glass to reveal forward red berries, red and black cherries and exotic spices. A distinctly New World style of wine, appealing in many ways but not for even moderate-term cellaring. Drink now-2011. Score 89. (Tasted twice with consistent notes 14 and 19 Jun 2009)

Thanks Daniel but my wine is NOT the Gran Reserva. It only cost $19. The importer is Maison Marques & Domains out of Oakland Ca.

Jim,

The particular wine you mention is released ready to drink. It can hold, but I've never noticed it getting markedly better in prior vintages.

Jim, Hi...

This may be the one in question...

Marques de Murrieta, Ygay, Reserva, Rioja Finca, 2005: Primarily Tempranillo, blended with small amounts of Garnacha and Mazuelo. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft tannins already well integrated and opening to show a generous mouthful of berry, cherry and dark chocolate notes, all on a lightly spicy background. Drink now-2010. Score 87. (Re-tasted 14 Jun 2009)

Hi Jim,

It was great to see you and Lucy at Mo'Cool this year. Regarding the wine, I would say to drink it up over the next 18 months. I doubt that it will get better, but should last for a while too. I had a 2004 Reserva from the Marques de Riscal over the past two days and it was as good on the 2nd as the first, so 18 months shouldn't hurt. Different wines, but both Rioja's and a lot of each is made.
