WTN: Murgo Etna Rosso 2008

by Bruce Hayes » Sun Aug 22, 2010 11:01 am

Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo

Sicily

A 90-10 per cent blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Marlellato.

Bright cherry red in the glass.

Earth, leather and smoke on the nose.

Medium weight, very tart acidity, earthy, leather, smoky, tangy dried cherry, floral.

Very tangy and drying on the finish..

An okay wine but not as good as their white.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian).

Bruce, on the basis of the Terre Nere range encountered at tastings, I am prepared to become a fan of both red and white Etna but still haven't had any at home due to the long road trip to this fully pricing importer. On this limited experience, it seems to me that Etna provides a quasi-Burgundian finesse very unusual in Sicily. Yours seems to be let down by the dry finish; the rest of the description sounds quite appealing to me.
