Seems like Cahors/Malbec/Argentina has hit the dust since that great Open Mike we had here so here is a great insight that is fun to read!

I'm a subscriber to The World of FIne Wine, but their tastings have always left me more than a bit confused. This was actually one of their better tastings, with some degree of alignment between the 3 panelists.

I do think Atkins took a classless swipe at "the staff of The Wine Advocate" in his last statement. It's not as if they are all of one mind when it comes to wine styles. One might as easily comment that a lean, austere wine is made for the staff of The World of Fine Wine. Neither comment would be fair though. I have to wonder why people cannot just play nice in the sand box.

Thanks for this interesting link.

Vintages Berkeley has in stock a Cahors and a Argentine Malbec (from a small producer) which are quite affordable. I would like to do a comparison tasting myself!

But surely the pendulum has swung far over to the sweet concentrated fruity side of the spectrum at the WA, as witness the reviews given to both the Australian and Argentinian wines made in that style (see, I avoided including Bordeaux...). I guess I don't think it was as unwarranted as you did.

Interesting article. I enjoy many Cahors, but Argentina is a bit problematic in that it requires either first hand experience or the review of someone whose taste you know. Many, many wines in a style I wouldn't give cellar space to from both areas.
