WTN: Hugel and Dame de Montrose

by Jay Labrador » Sat Aug 14, 2010 4:07 am

Spent early Saturday afternoon waiting for my daughter at the mall and so took the opportunity to drop by Wine Story to check out the bottles in the machine. Had enough time to try 3 wines.

La Dame de Montrose 2000 - I have 2 bottles of this wine and so was curious about how it's coming along. Good, rather woody fragrance. Very spicy on the palate and not much depth of flavor. Prominent acidity on the finish and firm tannins. Not really interesting at this stage and not quite ready. I'm guessing try again in 3 years.

Hugel Pinot Gris Tradition Hugel 2005 - Good nose, rose and a little musky. Quite crisp, dry, and elegant with gentle flavor. Grapefruit on the finish. Not bad and more of an aperitif wine. A rather lean interpretation of this grape.

Hugel Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive 2002 - Explosive nose. Lots of botrytis and caramel. On the palate though, not really that rich or sweet. The finish is rather watery. It s
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

I bought quite a bit of the 2000 La Dame de Montrose back when it was released. Liked to drink it then that I failed to store a few away, and quite regretful about it as local prices has crept up. A second-label success for Montrose.
