WTN: Splendid Smaragd

by Dale Williams » Wed Aug 04, 2010 9:47 am

With pork chops, cauliflower, and salad, the 2007 Knoll Ried Schutt Durnsteiner Riesling Smaragd. This is great stuff, big and dry but not the least bit austere. Peach and white nectarine, with a little lime note from the acidity. Full, fresh, fun. Stands up and matches well with the food. This could use time, but damn it's tasty already. Long and very minerally on finish, this goes on and on. Will try to resist and put my remaining bottles away for a while. A- , with room for improvement in my view. And I don't care what anyone says, I love the label.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Knoll's labels are awesome!

And that sounds delicious, thanks for the note. I haven't had many '07 Knolls, but I've really enjoyed most of the '07 Wachau Smaragds I've had so far.

Everything you guys said! Knoll is serious good stuff, and the label is gorgeous (almost as good as the stuff inside the bottle).

And isn't a well made Smaragd some of the best stuff there is?????

This was actually even better on day 2.
The label comment came because at Jay Miller's "we all turn 50" bash, someone was describing someone hating the labels as "old=-Fashioned"
