WTN: 1999 Produttori del Barbaresco (normale)

by David M. Bueker » Tue Aug 03, 2010 7:59 pm

From the glacial cellar, this was only showing near its best after 90 minutes open to the air. It's both floral and minerally, with a core of dark fruit that is still completely vibrant. There may not be a better value in Piemontese red wine than the Produttori normale. Year after year it continues to impress.

Thanks for the update, I've got one bottle and will start thinking about drinking it! I've also got a 2001. Any thoughts as to drinking window?

Very patient of you to wait this long, and well rewarded!

My only thought on the 2001 would be that based on the 1999 I would wait a few more years.

I still have one more bottle of the 1999, and I won't touch it until 2015 or so.

So much for quaffing these early while waiting for the crus to mature.

That is a frustrating problem Oswaldo, and why I regret not buying a case of this wine in every vintage since I first heard about it (1995). At least I would be able to drink something! I hear the '98 is quite good now.

I'd say the '98 and '00 are drinking well now. I don't have the '99 (darn!), but will hold 2001. I didn't buy 02 or 03.

Hmm - I am left wondering when I should consider opening any of my case of magnums of the 1999 normale. From your notes, it needs at least another 5 years!

We had a 99 Montestefano on the weekend and it was nowhere near ready to drink.

Just remember that David keeps his cellar at about 47 F. :)

FWIW, I bought a case of the 1985 Normale and drank it right through about 2000 - it mellowed and developed beautifully!
