A few whites and reds.

by Michael K » Sun Aug 01, 2010 1:06 am

Tried a few wines tonight with some friends over for dinner.

2004 Henry Bourgeois Jadis Sancerre: Nose was rather sulfurous but that blew off to review a nose that was a bit honeyed. On palate, grapefruit, citrus, good structure and persistence.

2006 Hamilton Russell Chardonnay: Oak up front but not dominating, decent balance, butter, good structure.

2005 Pauillac de Latour: This is a very nice bottle of juice in this vintage. Full, ripe , dense and very balanced. Long persistence. Opens up after a few hours and gains more weight. Good gawd, if this thing is this good, what is the big brother like????

1997 Domaine Ponsot MSD Cuvee Grives: Picked this up at an auction. Opened for the first time and noticed a cork that had no color on it...this thing had been stored upright for the last 13 years..... On pouring, the nose filled the room right away. Nose of slightly sweet fruit, on the palate, that still sweet fruit, wonderful balance, great persistence, medium body moving towards maturity. Great bottle!

2002 August Kesseler Cuvee Max Spatburgunder. Another wonderfully aged bottle of wine. Held up ot the other pinots tonight and that is no small task. Mature in color, the wine had developed some secondary characteristics.

Yup. It was good enough for a Village level wine that I did not complain. I did wonder with proper storage, would it have been this advanced in age (doubt it) as my guess would have been a late 80's wine...a decade difference. Also I still have two bottles left, and one is the one that I bought this for, the 89 Ponsot latriciere-Chambertain ....(which I'll pop soon after this experience). I hope that has not been sitting upright for the last 20 years......
