Just when we have all convinced ourselves that Vac-U-Vin is the ultimate closer a couple of Aussies come up with what might be as good or maybe better.
Here is a link to a totally different way to preserve wine and very convenient:
http://www.winepreserva.com/ or watch the video: http://www.winepreserva.com/howitworks.html
Really neat idea. I'll be getting a sample to try and will report back, but I can't see why it would not work.

One size fits all? I like the claims they make on their technical link, besides delaying oxidation, preserving aroma, maintaining SO2 levels, might help reduce TCA taint.

From a restaurant's point of view it makes sense. I wouldn't market it for personal use, but for small wine bars that can't afford the expensive ways of keeping the bottle fresh, this at least will allow you to widen your list a bit. If you can sell enough glasses over a five day period to make it worth opening the bottle, you are in good shape.

The answer is blowin' in the wind.

The same thought crossed my mind, David. I was looking for the little smiley or winking emoticons after that sentence. Back to the topic - this is sort of an interesting idea but as James said, I don't know about home use - I rarely have any wine left to save.

While I applaud the thinking, if not the advertising hype of these guys, the ideal storage facility for wine, one that absolutely ensures no degradation in quality, continues to be organic and resides several centimeters below my chin.....

I guess saving wine may be an issue for a restaurant serving by the glass, but at home, we try not to open anything we won't finish, and if we do, a vacuvin will serve well enough.

I wonder if the inventor is the guy who designed the styrofoam carrying case I once bought while in Australia. You know, cardboard box, foam inserts, suitable to sending a case of wine home as luggage. The guy who made it had the right idea--people needed these, and no one else was making them--but he designed the wine holes around a standard bordeaux bottle, and it was a snug fit at that. Those taller, wider shouldered bottles didn't fit, nor did burgs of course.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Wine preserving systems - not for me.

When I am appointed king or prince regent or elected prime minister or president (depending on the power each yields in his/her respective country), one of the first laws that I shall pass is that once opened in a private home or at a restaurant, the bottle of wine must be finished in the same evening. I shall allow left-overs to be used for sauces but beyond that there shall be a stiff-fine. And third offenders will be in the pillory for a minimum of six hours. As a second law I shall insist that all wineries produce at least one third of their wines in 375 ml. bottles.

Thou shalt not mess with the king, prince regent, prime minister or president!!!! So it shall be writ!

I am a cynic. Bottle opened, glass poured = oxygen ingress.

I dislike the 'up to 5 days' claim and can hear bar staff rejecting customer complaints by insisting the device keeps the wine fresh for 5 days.

At least these guys have gone to the trouble of comissioning research rather than relying on a few selective comments for endorsement.

Did you read their white paper Peter? There is no mention the scale of the tests in terms of numbers of tasters and different wines, and they may be be blatantly lying , but taken at face value the results seem to back up their 5 day claim (or a 4 day claim at least). See in particular the last 2 diagrams in the white paper.

Hi Steve,
We know they sent at least 4 samples of wine to ETS for evaluation. By problem is for every slightly different size bottle out there will they get similar results. Somehow this thin sheet of film has to “shape” itself snuggly against the inside of the bottle. Similar to what my Great Grandfather did when he added olive oil to his barrel of wine as he emptied the wine out of it.

The plastic cover is designed with a slotted edge that should "fit" most bottles (they say about 85%). I have no interest in this product, and will try to do a valid, comparative test to see if it works. It may not. Let's wait an see how it does. I will report back, unless someone else has a chance to "test-drive" before I do.
