WTN: Hart Cellars 2005 Riesling

by Mike Filigenzi » Mon Jul 26, 2010 11:39 pm

I have most of a case of wine from Howie sitting in my basement. It was meant for an offline (the first Resnick Santa Barbara drinkathon) but didn't arrive in time for that. I've been hoping to share this with other WLDG'ers in the offline spirit, but such opportunities have been rare. No sense in this going to waste, though, so I tucked into a bottle of the '05 Riesling tonight.

The color is a straw yellow, with no hint of oxidation to it. The bottle's a bit warmer than ideal when I open it, but there are no flaws of any kind evident on the nose. Nothing there but peachy riesling aromas with maybe the slightest hint of petroleum (or maybe that was just me). In the mouth, it's just delicious. There's an initial hit of that same peachy fruit along with a little lemon oil that's followed with nice crisp acidity. I get the feeling there may be a little RS to this, but the acidity gives the impression of dryness. RS or no RS, this is a really well balanced wine. There's also a touch of a bitter quality that I get out of riesling sometimes, which only adds to the interest.

Great stuff, as always.

Good to know the '05 is still holding up. I think I may have 1 or 2 left. Mike - I don't know what else I sent you, but you might as well drink them up.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Yeah, I've decided the same, Howie.
