Interesting concept. Any places in our area thinking about this?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?

There's a local burger joint that serves wine by the glass from some sort of keg-like contraption. The wine is made by Revolution, located in downtown Sacto. We had a red blend from the tap that was really pretty good burger wine. Not over-ripe or confected, but plenty sturdy enough to handle beef, catsup, mustard, and onions. Only odd aspect was a barely perceptible fizziness that I think may have come from the dispensing system.

On another forum I frequent (for home wine makers and grape growers) several people make their wines and store them in "Corny Kegs", which are SS containers designed for soda pop. The wines are then dispensed using small nitrogen canisters. Some folks even charge the corny kegs with CO2 to make bubblies.

Thanks for the link, David. Wine Kegs make sense for high volume by-the-glass serving; especially if you think about the benefits of box wines regarding oxygen infiltration and all the other elements that harm wines.

When I was in Portugal I noticed the carafe Vinho Verde was often dispensed from a tap. Probably 2 euros for half a litre, off-dry and slighly bubbly. Just the thing on a hot day!

Not exactly our area and probably a different technology but the Boxwood tasting room in Middleburg VA has something similar. I will say that every taste they poured us came out of one of the "machines."

In the past these fancy casks in bars/restaurants have contained the 'bag in a box' bladder

Whole Foods in the Fair Lakes VA has over 80 wines on tap. I have been meaning to check their wine list and try a few. I'm sure each glass is reasonably priced.

Are you being sarcastic about by using the words 'reasonably priced' and 'Whole Foods' in the same sentence?

Anyway, this sounds like a system that dispenses wine from bottles; what the OP was asking about was wine in bulk being dispensed from a tap (which might be a 'greener' way to sell wine in restaurants ).

The Whole Foods we go to (Portland, ME) does not have a dispenser, but the bottled wines are reasonably priced, even compared to NH Liq Store prices.

I'm thinking of the WF pricing in general, since we don't have too many with licences (very limited in NJ). When I did visit a WF with wine the prices were a few dollars more per bottle than somewhere like Wine Library (my local).

Yes, I was being sarcastic about being reasonably priced!! And yes I meant a system that dispenses wine from bottle. The Washington Post had a write-up on that WF when they opened and they showed the wine dispensing system... looked pretty cool. If I could get a glass of really good wine for a "reasonable" price ($5-8), then it would be worth it. I just hate paying that much for mediocre bulk wine in a restaurant.
