Has anyone visited Ellston winery in Sunol?

by Brian K Miller » Mon Jul 26, 2010 11:10 am

I was doing my usual thing on our furlough friday :? when I came across this magnificent 100-year old stone mansion in Sunol, near Pleasanton in the far Southeast Bay (Alameda County). (Foothill road is one of the most beautiful cycling roads in the area if you visit during non-commute times)

Anyway...they were open only on weekends, so I was not able to stop. But, the structure was magnificent!

A long time ago (like 20-25 years ago), yes. Mine main memory is how pretty is was; I have no recollection at all of the wines. That might be because the wines were that unmemorable but I have the feeling it was because I had the same experience you did - showed up when the place wasn't open.

I feel safe recommending that you enjoy the view, rather than try the wines, if you're an arboisphile. The "Captain's Claret" is a balanced blend, and the sparkler (not Champagne method) is clean, but other than that I was not impressed. The house is just as pretty inside as out, though.

Cool! Thanks for the recco! :?

I actually rode out Vineyard Avenue your way after coming back through Pleasanton. I liked the Deer Ridge wines...very restrained and plenty of acid.
