Question? Green Hungarian

by Michael A » Sun Jul 25, 2010 9:54 pm

I remember back in my restaurant days in the 70's & 80's serving a lot of Green Hungarian, I can't remember if it was Wente Bros., Parducci, Almaden or whoever. It was a soft fruity wine and easy to drink. It was very very popular. Is it a varietal? from where? some history?,does anyone make this wine today? Thought I would ask...

thanks

Wente sold a lot of the stuff (as did others), but it was actually Weibel that was most recognized for Green Hungarian.

All I ever heard about the variety was that it was purportedly associated with Agoston Harazsthy and his bringing in some Euro varieties, but it is pretty vague. Also suspect that GH was such an essentially bland and nondescript wine (sort of like a lot of what the call Pinot Grigio these days  ) that most of the ampelographers pretty much ignored doing any research on it. And I think it's disappearing as a variety for California.

But if you remember those, you probably also remember the Grey Riesling and the Blanc de Blancs, both made famous by Wente.

I think that the spiritual home of Green Hungarian is, was, remains Temecula, California. Does Callaway still make wine there?

Don't forget Paul Masson's Emerald Riesling! First wine I ever encountered that would not stand upright on the refrigerator shelf.

I would support this answer. I've been to and spoken with the family a few times and they still reference this wine.
