WTN: The other Hermannshöhle

by Salil » Sun Jul 25, 2010 10:25 am

2008 Weingut Jakob Schneider Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese (Nahe)
Fantastic Spätlese; packed with red fruits, peaches and gentle spicy notes over a crystalline mineral frame. Very polished and silken with lovely acidity keeping it very light and precise, finishing long with a gentle sweetness.

Do you mean the other Hermannshöhle of note?

I know there is also Hermannshöhle from Gutsverwaltung Niederhausen Schlossböckelheim (I've only tasted the 06, it was decent) and there might be others?

Rahsaan,

One thing of note is that the old state domaine that you refer to has, under its new ownership, traded its parcel of Hermannshohle to Donnhoff, in exchange for his parcel of Kupfergrube.

Aha. That would explain why I had several bottles of the 06 (one of which I remember having with you) but did not see the vineyard on the current website.

The other Hermannshöhle I try to buy these days (and really should buy more of, given the quality and price). I normally pay more attention to Dönnhoff's wines from this vineyard, but Schneider's 07 from here was stunning and the 08 is pretty similar in quality (just a little leaner and more acid-driven, as I'd have expected from the vintage). I loved Schneider's 09 collection at the Skurnik tasting recently, found it excellent across the board and I will be trying to get my hands on some of his Hermannshöhle Spätlese, Auslese Jr. and Eiswein.

I know the Mathern estate also used to make a very nice Hermannshöhle Spätlese at one point, but I haven't seen the wines for a while (since Skurnik/Theise dropped them) and don't know what's happening at the estate now.

Even though Hermannshöhle is the superior site, it is a pretty good trade for both (like trading a good prospect slugging-catcher for a much-needed, serviceable, 3rd in the rotation starter when you´ve already got Joe Mauer.) Dönnhoff gets more of the vineyard with which he is most associated and the Gutswervaltung gets a bigger slice of the vineyard in which they are. Plus, they still have the monopoly on Hermannsberg.

Cheers,
Bill
