WTN: 2009 Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc

by Drew Hall » Sat Jul 24, 2010 9:04 am

Marlborough, NZ
Or, what wine to drink when it's 100 degrees on your first day of vacation!
Arrived at the beach house in Ocean City, Maryland at 3PM and it was 100 on the thermometer. Iced this baby down and very crisp, steely NZ SB with lots of passion fruit, gooseberry, lemon, pineapple and a touch of cat pee. Finishes long due to the 3.8g/l of residal sugar. Very much enjoyed with pan sauted tilapia and local tomatoes in the insalata caprese style.
13% Alc/vol. $10

Quite a few years ago Spy Valley SB was one of the best value SB's in Los Angeles--it got everything right and was only, like, $8. Don't recall what vintage that was but the 09 sounds like whichever it was all over again.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

For some reason, I've been able to fine Spy Valley in Boston for quite cheap in the last few years, down to about $7 a bottle. Either the wine store bought too much or the distributor brought over too many. Then again Bostons distribution structure is not the best so no sense trying to understand it.

I have always like this wine but here it sells for about $15. I think it is good value but certainly not great. At that price I still like the Mud House 2009 Marlborough and Wither Hills 2008 better.

Mike, you can get it here in New Hampshire, but you have to special order it through your closest store. It does run closer to $15 here too.
