WTN: Bachelet and Lafon

by Dale Williams » Fri Jul 23, 2010 7:47 am

Tuesday was herbed pork chops and a quinoa salad, along with the 2006 Bachelet Cotes de Nuits Villages. I was a little worried this might be shut down, but it was fairly expressive. Black fruit, earth, sandalwood, nice length. Some tannins on the backend. Really nice wine, a real overachiever. Wednesday we had chicken on tabouli at river concert, but I didn't drink due to taking a group to city later. But when I got back from NYC a bit after midnight, had a half glass of the Bachelet while checking email. Even more expressive, fruit getting a lush tone, tannins less evident. Just the faintest hint of oxidation. I think I only have one more, will let rest a few years. B+/A-

Thursday Dave and Mary Kate joined us for dinner with Szechuan shrimp. Betsy had originally told me "shrimp with snow peas" so I thought Chardonnay would do ok, and opened the 2006 Les Heretiers du Comte Lafon Macon. Sweet, ripe, a bit Californiaesque, but with good length and some interesting floral/mineral notes. B

Dish was a bit spicy for the Burg, so also had the 2007 Donnhoff Estate Riesling. The sweetness helped with dish, but I kept thinking there was a hint of taint in the background. After about 10 minutes I was convinced- corked.

Off to Atlanta for couple days, will still check in occasionally (I'm a wine board addict!)

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Too bad about the corked Donnhoff.

Thanks for the Bachelet note. I keep looking at my 2006 CdNV, and then say, nah, it must be closed. Apparently not.

I take it you both mean Denis Bachelet? I have an 06 Bourgogne that I was going to hold for another year or two...

Yes, Domaine Bachelet, aka Denis Bachelet. The other 2 Bachelets (Bernard Bachelet & Fils, and I think Jean Claude) are to my knowledge only in the CdBeaune. I wouldn't worry about holding the 06 Bourgogne, the 02 still can hold, I would think the 06 has plenty of time left.
I don't think the Bourgogne and the CdNV ever shut down hard like the Gevrey VV and Charmes do.
